On the evening of March 20, 1967, Jim Rible and his daughter, Jean, drove a Volkswagen along the rural roads surrounding Butler, Pennsylvania, after unusual lights moving at low altitude near their home had caught the family’s attention. They simply wanted to get a closer look at the lights and determine whether they could be explained as ordinary aircraft. However, what they claimed to witness that night went far beyond a sighting of unexplained lights in the sky.
Rible’s wife had been the first to notice the lights and had told him what she had seen. Although a private airfield was located approximately one mile from their home, the lights’ unusual movements aroused their curiosity. The father and daughter therefore decided to drive into the surrounding area to investigate. When they reached a suitable spot along the roadside, Rible stopped the car and switched off the headlights, hoping to observe the sky without the vehicle’s illumination obstructing his view.
A short time later, two rounded points of light appeared at an estimated distance of about one mile. According to accounts of the incident that circulated afterward, the lights moved alongside one another, their colors fluctuating between white and yellow. They then began approaching at considerable speed, seemingly heading directly toward the car. Some accounts estimated their speed at between 70 and 80 miles per hour before they came to an abrupt stop approximately 50 yards away.
At that moment, the encounter took an even more disturbing turn. Rible and his daughter reportedly saw five humanoid figures standing in front of the car. According to descriptions attributed to the two witnesses, four of the figures were approximately the same height, measuring around five feet seven inches, while the fifth was shorter, standing roughly five feet tall.
The figures wore loose-fitting, gray-green clothing consisting of shirts and trousers, with white garments visible beneath their outer clothing. Their headwear was described as having flat tops. According to the witnesses, however, the figures did not merely resemble people dressed in unusual outfits. Their facial features appeared distinctly different, provoking fear in both observers.
As described in accounts published about the incident, the figures’ faces showed little or no expression. Their eyes appeared as narrow horizontal slits, with no clearly visible features resembling the irises and pupils of human eyes. Their noses were thin and pointed, while their mouths were small and slit-like. The witnesses described their skin as rough in texture, with an appearance that reminded them of the skin of people who had sustained severe burns.
The account also noted differences in the figures’ hairstyles. The four taller figures were reportedly blond and had short hair, whereas the shortest had longer hair falling to the shoulders. Some writers who recounted the story inferred that the smaller figure might have been female. This, however, remained an interpretation based on its appearance rather than an independently verified fact.
The experience described by Jean was not limited to seeing the figures. She reportedly heard voices inside her mind, as though someone were addressing her without speaking aloud. The experience was later described as a form of telepathic communication. However, this description reflects the witness’s interpretation of what happened; it does not, in itself, establish that communication occurred through an extraordinary means.
With the figures still standing in front of the car, Rible struggled to respond to the situation. When he finally managed to start the engine, he drove away in an attempt to escape. According to the account, the vehicle nearly struck the figures as it moved off. Yet the danger did not end once they had left the immediate area. The father and daughter claimed that the strange lights began pursuing their car as they drove along the road.
During the alleged pursuit, Rible experienced another disturbing episode. He said he heard voices inside his head ordering him to stop and remain still. Rather than obeying, he kept driving, determined to put as much distance as possible between the car and the lights pursuing them. The experience reportedly continued until the lights disappeared, at which point the voices also ceased.
The account left no clear image that could easily be examined, but rather a collection of details based primarily on what the two witnesses reportedly described: two lights moving through the sky, five strange figures near the car, unfamiliar facial features, voices that others could not hear, and a pursuit that ended only after they had driven away from the area. Some details of the story, including the figures’ precise measurements and the lights’ speed, also vary in the way they are presented across accounts circulated in UFO literature.
According to the narrative, the encounter ended when the father and daughter left the area and drove away from the lights. Some versions state that they subsequently went to the home of a clergyman, seeking a safe place where they could discuss what had happened. However, the available record provides no conclusive physical evidence establishing the nature of the objects they saw or explaining the voices they described.
Despite the passage of time, the Butler incident has retained its place in accounts of alleged encounters with humanoid beings. Its historical significance lies in the fact that its details were collected and published in UFO literature, not in any proof that it established the existence of visitors from beyond Earth. To this day, the story remains a testimony to an unusual experience, while the identity of the lights and figures that appeared in front of the car remains an unanswered question. By: Salil Rachid
